How To Choose a Heart Shaped Diamond
The main tool for choosing diamonds is 4Cs. And how to choose a heart shaped diamond based on 4Cs is recommended by Y. as follows:
- Color: Color quality of H, G, or higher are the best color choices for heart shaped diamonds. Lower qualities are an option, but the yellow tint will show more in heart shaped diamonds compared to other shapes. Higher quality will be less tinted and perfect for crafting jewelry.
- Cut: While diamonds in general have cut grades, heart shaped diamonds do not. Heart diamonds are evaluated by overall balance and the symmetry of the curves, and the girdle should be neatly polished which can be one of the most crucial characteristics that can determine the price of the diamond. The better the cut, the higher the price of heart diamonds worth purchasing and selling.
- Clarity: Quality VS and up is recommended. Inclusions should not be in the table, but around the slope along the lobe, belly, and wing–so they are not so visible.
- Carat: Heart diamond weight should be more than 0.50 carats for a balanced heart shape. Heart shaped diamonds under 1 carats usually have a higher price compared to other diamonds with the same or more weight. Thus, some stores will advise you to buy a heart shaped diamond with more than 1.5 carats weight for the best bargain.
The recommendations can be visually seen in the photos.
Y Jewelry preferred heart diamond ratio is at around 0.85 – 0.95 carats, and GIA recommendation is at 1.1 carats. The table of a diamond tends to be in the shape of a long heart, while the diamond shape and ratio depends on each person’s preference. However, 0.85 – 0.95 carats is recommended as the ratio of the diamond is the most well-balanced, which makes a well-worth purchase.
Extra Tips: When customizing a heart shaped diamond into a jewelry or accessory, the design should support the point of the heart to protect the diamond and hide inclusions.
