The Story of Premium Diamond

What is Premium Size diamond? First let’s go through the fact about the relationship between diamond weight and its price.

1.The diamond weight unit is ‘carat’ 2.Diamond price will be categorized by the appointed weight group 3.Diamond price per carat in every weight group will be different – specifically higher the carat, higher the price per carat. For example, weight groups 0.90-0.99 กะรัต / 1.00-1.49 กะรัต Diamond price data of each weight group will be adjusted every now and then in a trading document called ‘Rapaport’ as a benchmark price used by jewellers around the world.

Now in part of Premium size diamond, it is the heaviest diamond in each weight group. For example, diamonds that weigh 0.98 and 0.99 carat will be considered as premium size of 0.90-0.99 carat weight group.

However, premium size diamond is rare and to find the good proportion ones is even harder. The diamond cutter would prefer to make bigger size diamonds to make more money per carat. Because the heavy the diamond the price per carat will also be higher as described above. Therefore, if not necessary he will try to make his diamonds to weigh around 1.00 carat, not 0.98 or 0.99.

Let me show you the price difference:

For example, round diamond D color, vvs1 clarity
  • diamond weight group 0.90-0.99 carat the price will be 11,400 USD/carat
  • diamond weight group 1.00-1.49 carat the price will be 16,500 USD/carat
The difference is as much as 5,100 USD/carat but the size wise, the premium size one is not much diffrent from the 1 carat piece. And that is why sometimes we call premium size diamond an ‘Oversize Diamond’. Such a great name and such as great deal indeed!

As you can see, premium size diamond prices usually do not decrease, considered as a great buy or even great investment in bigger stones. In many occasions, we see that the seller could sell premium size diamond even higher that the Rapaport especially if that piece has some special features.
