The secret of 3 EX (Triple Excellent Diamonds)
❂ Which EX is the most important?
❂ Will 3EX affect the price?
What is 3 EX?
EX stands for Excellence, specifically in quality grade of 3 areas which are,
- Cutting: the quality of cutting or refining
- Symmetry: the symmetry of each facet
- Polishing: the neatness of the outer surface of the diamond
Quality grades for each area can fall into either one of these levels: very poor / poor / good / very good / and excellent. The diamond that receives an excellence grade on all areas is 3EX diamond.
Which EX is the most important one?
‘Cutting’, of course.
In ‘cutting’, it is the whole structure of a diamond. Let’s compare this to building a house, cutting is a house blueprint that will determine the fitting of proportion and usable area. As for ‘symmetry’, it is a decoration of the inside. ‘Polish’ is keeping a house clean from the outside.
Will 3EX affect the price?
Yes, the 3EX diamonds are normally more expensive. However, it is hard to say how much exactly they would be more expensive as there are a lot of factors affecting the price of diamonds. In case that you prefer to control your budget, I would recommend that you could considering drop the grades for symmetry and polishing down to VG or G. If you go for that choice, the focus will shift to more on checking inclusions qualities, meaning that the inclusions should be no color ones and don’t casue the reflection effect. This should ensure you to have a good buy with a more affordable budget.
Note: 3EX will only use with a round-shaped diamond. For other diamond shapes, the highest grade will only be at 2EX, which only grades from symmetry and polishing.
