Getting to Know the Rapaport
In this article, Y.Jewelry would like to introduce ‘Rapaport’, also known as ‘Rap’ for short, which is known to jewelers around the world.
Rapaport (Rap) is the diamond industry standard price list for diamond markets around the world.
The pricing chart is based on the diamond weight, which can be divided into 18 tiers for round diamonds and 14 tiers for fancy cut diamonds. In each tier, there will be a price range of a diamond according to the 4Cs.
How to read the Rapaport Diamond Report?
☰ First Step ☰
Know the diamond specs, this includes:
Round cut or fancy cut? (As these two cuts have separated price charts.)
Diamond’s weight, color, and clarity
☰ Second Step ☰
See the price according to the diamond weight. For example, if our targeted diamond weighs 0.55 CT, look at the 0.50-0.69 CT on the chart.
☰ Third Step ☰
In the chart, match the diamond’s color and clarity; the color would be the column while the clarity would be the row with the clearest on the left, to I3 on the right.
From the chart, we will see the price of our target diamond on the list, as in the picture below. If we are looking for 0.32 CT round diamond price with F color and VS1 clarity, see the cross-match point on the chart, and we will have the number “21″.
☰ Fourth Step ☰
Now that we have our 2-digit number, add two more “0”, or multiply by 100, which will make the number 2100.
☰ Fifth Step ☰
The price above will be per carat in US dollars, which we will turn into THB according to the daily exchange rate before multiplying with the actual diamond weight.
- From the example, we will have 2,100*35 THB = 73,500/CT
- The diamond weight is 0.32 CT = 73,500*0.32
- Thus, this will make the 0.32 CT F color, SI1 clarity diamond at the price of 23,520 THB.
PS. ***Prices listed in the Rapaport are only for references. Jewelry stores usually offer discounts as percentages based on the Rapaport. For the final pricing, there are other factors that will be taken into consideration; for example, the rarity of each diamond specification, the amount of demand and supply of that diamond at the time, etc.
Knowing how to read the Rapaport chart will definitely be beneficial for those who would like to purchase a diamond, as having a reference point is always better.
