3 Things you should know about Fluorescence in diamonds
Have you ever noticed that in every Diamond certificate from any institute, there will be a topic called fluorescence? Have you ever known what it is, and if it is important for buying diamonds?
Today I will elaborate on 3 main issues that we should know before buying diamonds, specifically on fluorescence.
What is Fluorescence?
It’s the phenomenon that diamonds conduct blue lights when they meet with the UV rays, which is a specific tool used to grade diamonds. Mostly it will conduct blue light, but green and yellow light can also be found. The luminous intensity level can vary from Faint, Medium, Strong, and Very Strong, sometimes we call it fluorescence diamond. For diamonds that show no such effect, we will call them as None-Flu. In GIA certificate, it will say None while in HRD certificate, it will show as Nil.
How does Fluorescence affect diamonds?
Fluorescence will mainly affect diamonds in 2 ways:
1. If the Diamond has a very strong Fluorescence, the diamond will look milky and oily. This effect will be more visible to the bare eye when it is strong and can be easily detected in a higher color diamond. 2. In the I – M color diamonds, the color group in which the yellow tint is visible to the bare eye, this fluorescence can help improve the color of such diamonds. The fluorescense effect will make the diamonds look whiter as the blue can cut off the yellow.
Will the fluorescence affect the diamond price?
In H color diamonds or upper, the fluorescence has a declining effect on the diamond as it is not a favorable factor for buyers. That is why their price are pretty much affordable compared to the non-flu ones.
